AMC 12와 AIME 점수를 합산해 상위 소수만 초청하는 미국의 증명형 수학 올림피아드다.
무엇인가
USAMO는 미국수학협회(MAA)가 주관하는 초청제 증명형 수학 올림피아드다. 객관식이 아니다. 답에 이르는 논증 전체를 처음부터 끝까지 써내야 한다. 6문제를 이틀에 걸쳐 푼다. 초청은 AMC 12와 AIME 점수를 합친 지표(AMC 12 점수 + 20 × AIME 점수)로 갈리고, 그중 최상위 소수만 부른다. AMC 10 경로로 올라온 학생은 자매 대회인 USAJMO로 간다.
한국 학생 참가
한국 학생의 참가는 조건부다. 먼저 AMC 12를 보고 기준을 넘으면 AIME에 초청된다. 거기서 AMC 12와 AIME 합산 지표가 상위권에 들어야 USAMO 초청이 온다. AMC 계열 시험은 한국 내 공인 시험장에서 치를 수 있다. 다만 USAMO는 시민권이나 영주권 같은 자격 요건이 걸릴 수 있으니, 본인 자격은 MAA 공식 안내로 직접 확인해라. 자격에 걸리는 비미국 학생은 같은 지표를 채워도 USAMO 대신 별도 인정 경로로 처리될 수 있다.
입시에서의 의미
USAMO 초청은 매년 전국에서 수백 명 수준으로 끊긴다. 그래서 정량으로 검증되는 수학 역량 신호로 읽힌다. 이건 맥락일 뿐이다. 성적 하나로 합격이 되진 않고 수상을 장담하지도 못한다. 입시 결과는 지원 서류 전체와 맥락에서 갈린다.
USAMO에 직접 신청해서 나갈 수 있나?
직접 신청은 안 된다. AMC 12를 보고, AIME에 초청받고, 그다음 AMC 12와 AIME 합산 지표가 상위권에 들어야 초청이 온다. 선발제 대회다.
USAMO와 USAJMO는 뭐가 다른가?
USAMO는 AMC 12 기반 지표로, USAJMO는 AMC 10 기반 지표로 뽑는다. 둘 다 증명형 6문제를 이틀에 푸는 형식이고, 보통 더 위 트랙이 USAMO다.
한국에 살아도 응시 자격이 되나?

What it is
USAMO is an invitation-only, proof-based math olympiad run by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). No multiple choice. You write out the full argument, start to finish. Six problems over two days. Invitations come from a combined index of your AMC 12 and AIME scores (AMC 12 score + 20 × AIME score), and only the top handful get the call. Students who came up through the AMC 10 go to the sister contest, USAJMO.
For Korean students
For students based in Korea, getting in is a chain. First you take the AMC 12. Clear the threshold and you qualify for the AIME. Place near the top on the combined AMC 12 plus AIME index and the USAMO invitation follows. You can sit the AMC-series exams at authorized test sites in Korea. USAMO itself, though, may turn on citizenship or residency, so check your own eligibility directly against official MAA guidance. Non-U.S. students who hit the index but fall outside the eligibility rules may be recognized through a separate track instead of the USAMO.
Why it matters for admissions
A USAMO invitation cuts off at a few hundred students nationwide each year. That makes it a verifiable signal of math ability. Read it as context, not a verdict. One score won't get you admitted and it can't promise an award. Outcomes come from the whole application and how it reads together.
Can you sign up for the USAMO directly?
No. There's no direct registration. You take the AMC 12, qualify for the AIME, then place near the top on the combined AMC 12 plus AIME index. Only then does the invitation come.
How is the USAMO different from the USAJMO?
The USAMO selects off the AMC 12 index, the USAJMO off the AMC 10 index. Both are six-problem, two-day proof exams. The USAMO is generally the upper track.
Are Korea-based students eligible to compete?
You can take the AMC-series exams at authorized sites in Korea. But USAMO eligibility may depend on citizenship or residency, so verify your own case through official MAA guidance.
