미국 물리 올림피아드 (USAPhO, USA Physics Olympiad)
미국 물리 국가대표를 뽑는 선발 시험의 본선이다. 먼저 F=ma 예선을 통과해야 응시한다.
무엇인가
USAPhO는 미국물리교사협회(AAPT)가 운영하는 미국 물리 경시의 본선이다. 1차 예선인 F=ma 시험은 역학 중심 객관식이고, 여기서 컷오프를 넘긴 학생만 USAPhO에 초청된다. USAPhO는 풀이 과정을 직접 쓰는 서술형 시험이다. 상위 성적자는 U.S. Physics Team 훈련 캠프에 들어가고, 그 안에서 국제물리올림피아드(IPhO) 미국 대표팀이 추려진다. 그러니까 USAPhO는 그 자체로 끝나는 대회가 아니라 미국 대표 선발 파이프라인의 한 단계다.
한국 학생 참가
한국에 사는 학생이 USAPhO 경로를 그대로 밟기는 어렵다. 1차 F=ma 시험이 미국 소재 학교 재학생을 대상으로 운영되기 때문이다. 한국에서 물리 올림피아드 국가대표를 노린다면 보통 한국물리학회가 주관하는 한국물리올림피아드(KPhO)를 거쳐 IPhO 한국 대표 경로를 따른다. 미국 학교에 다니는 한국 국적 학생이라면 그 학교를 통해 F=ma에 응시할 수 있고, 통과하면 USAPhO에 초청받는다. 단, IPhO 미국 대표팀은 시민권·거주 요건이 따로 있으니 국가대표 자격은 개별로 확인해야 한다.
입시에서의 의미

What it is
USAPhO is the second round of the U.S. physics competition run by the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). The first round, F=ma, is a mechanics-focused multiple-choice test. Clear its cut-off and you get invited to USAPhO, which is a free-response exam where you write out full solutions. Top scorers move on to the U.S. Physics Team training camp, and the national team for the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) gets picked from there. So USAPhO is a stage in a selection pipeline, not a standalone contest.
For Korean students
If you live in Korea, you can't really follow the USAPhO path as-is. The first round, F=ma, is given to students enrolled at U.S.-based schools. To aim for a physics olympiad national team from Korea, you usually go through the Korean Physics Olympiad (KPhO), run by the Korean Physical Society, which feeds the Korean IPhO team. A Korean-national student at a U.S. school can sit F=ma through that school, and if they pass, they get invited to USAPhO. One catch: the U.S. IPhO team has its own citizenship and residency rules, so check national-team eligibility separately.
Why it matters for admissions
Reaching USAPhO and scoring well is a strong signal of physics ability in U.S. college admissions. It's a signal, though, not a promise of admission or any award. Admissions are holistic, so no single competition result decides the outcome. For students in Korea, the more practical move is proving the same depth through the KPhO and IPhO pathway.
How is the F=ma exam different from USAPhO?
