미국 학교 팀이 스무 개 넘는 과학 종목을 나눠 맡아 한꺼번에 겨루는 팀 대회다.
무엇인가
사이언스 올림피아드는 학교 단위로 치르는 미국 과학 대회다. 한 학교가 한 팀을 꾸리고, 팀원들이 생물·화학·물리·지구과학·공학 종목을 하나씩 나눠 맡는다. 그래서 여러 종목이 동시에 돌아간다. 종목은 크게 세 가지다. 책상에 앉아 푸는 시험형, 현장에서 실험하는 실험형, 미리 만들어 와서 성능을 겨루는 장치형. 부문은 둘로 나뉜다. 미들스쿨이 Division B, 하이스쿨이 Division C다. 대회는 지역에서 시작해 주, 전국으로 올라간다. 한 단계를 통과해야 다음 단계에 간다.
한국 학생 참가
한국에 있는 학생이 직접 나가기는 어렵다. 이 대회는 미국 학교가 팀을 등록해서 지역·주·전국으로 올라가는 구조라, 한국 학교가 정식 멤버로 등록돼 있지 않으면 들어갈 자리가 없다. 실제로 참가하려면 미국 중·고교에 다니면서 그 학교 팀에 합류하는 길이 거의 유일하다. 한국에서 공부하는 학생이라면 대회에 직접 나가기보다, 공개된 종목 규칙과 기출을 공부 자료로 쓰는 편이 낫다. 비슷한 국내·국제 과학 대회로 방향을 트는 것도 방법이다.
입시에서의 의미
팀워크와 폭넓은 과학·공학 실력을 보여주는 활동이다. 미국 입시에서는 STEM을 깊게 파고 협업까지 해봤다는 신호로 읽힌다. 다만 참가나 수상 하나로 합격이 되진 않는다. 결국 학생이 팀에서 무슨 역할을 했고, 어디까지 갔고, 지원서 전체와 어떻게 맞물리느냐에 따라 무게가 달라진다.
사이언스 올림피아드는 개인전인가 팀전인가?
기본은 학교 팀이다. 팀원들이 종목을 나눠 맡아 동시에 겨루고, 종목 점수를 합쳐 팀 순위를 낸다. 어떤 종목은 두세 명이 짝을 이뤄 한다.
한국에서 학교 다니는 학생도 참가할 수 있나?
직접 참가는 어렵다. 대회가 미국 학교의 등록 팀을 기준으로 지역·주·전국으로 올라가기 때문이다. 보통은 미국 중·고교에 다니면서 그 학교 팀에 들어가는 길이다.
미들스쿨과 하이스쿨 부문은 어떻게 나뉘나?
두 부문이다. Division B가 미들스쿨, Division C가 하이스쿨이다. 부문마다 종목 구성과 난이도가 다르다. 학년 기준은 매년 나오는 규칙집에서 확인하는 게 정확하다.
What it is
Science Olympiad is a US science competition run by schools. One school builds one team, and the students divide up the events between them: biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, engineering. So a lot of events run at the same time. The events come in three shapes. Some are written tests you sit and take. Some are hands-on labs you run on the spot. Some are devices you build ahead of time and bring to compete. There are two divisions: B for middle school, C for high school. Teams start at the regional level, move up to state, and the best reach the national tournament. You have to clear one stage to reach the next.
For Korean students
If you're a student in Korea, getting in directly is hard. The competition runs on teams that US schools register, climbing from regionals to state to nationals, so a Korean school that isn't a registered member has no slot. The one realistic way in is to attend a US middle or high school and join its team. If you're studying in Korea, you're better off using the published event rules and past papers as study material instead of trying to enter. Pointing yourself at a comparable domestic or international science competition works too.
Why it matters for admissions
It shows teamwork and a wide range of science and engineering skill. In US admissions it reads as a sign that a student went deep in STEM and worked alongside others. But entering or winning doesn't get anyone in by itself. What carries weight is the role the student played on the team, how far they went, and how the activity fits the rest of the application.
Is Science Olympiad an individual or a team competition?
It's a school team. Students split the events between them and compete at the same time, and the event scores add up into a team ranking. Some events are run in pairs or trios.
Can a student attending school in Korea take part?
Direct entry is hard, because the competition is built around registered US school teams climbing from regionals to state to nationals. The usual path is to attend a US middle or high school and join its team.
How are the middle school and high school divisions split?
There are two. Division B is middle school, Division C is high school. Each has its own event lineup and difficulty. For exact grade eligibility, check the rules manual that comes out each year.
