Scholastic Art & Writing Awards (Writing)
(Scholastic Art & Writing Awards)
What it is
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is run by the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. The writing program splits into categories like poetry, short story, personal essay, and journalism, and it's open to students in grades 7-12 (age 13 and up). Every entry goes through regional judging first. There it can earn a Gold Key, Silver Key, or Honorable Mention, and only Gold Key work moves up to national judging.
For Korean students
Students who live and go to school in Korea can't enter. The official 2027 Participation Terms accept only students in grades 7-12 who live and attend school in the U.S., U.S. territories or military bases, or Canada (excluding Quebec). The terms state that students living and attending school outside those areas are not eligible even if they attend a U.S.-accredited school abroad, including U.S. Department of State Overseas Schools, regardless of citizenship. That includes international schools in Seoul. The art and writing categories follow the same terms. Entry only becomes possible if you live and attend school in the U.S. or Canada (outside Quebec). Everything is submitted as English-language writing, and the terms and submission window (usually fall to winter) are updated each year, so check the current official terms before you submit.
Why it matters for admissions
It's one of the oldest and best-known youth creative-writing contests in the U.S. An award shows you can write in English and that you've kept at it. But the award alone doesn't decide admission to any college or any evaluation outcome.
Can a student living in Korea enter?
No. The official Participation Terms only accept students who live and attend school in the U.S., U.S. territories or military bases, or Canada (excluding Quebec). Attending a U.S.-accredited school outside those areas doesn't qualify, regardless of citizenship, so students at international schools in Seoul aren't eligible. The terms are updated each year, so check the current version before you submit.
What writing categories are there?
Poetry, short story, personal essay, journalism, and more. Check the official site for the exact list and submission rules.
How does the judging work?
Entries are judged regionally first, where they can earn a Gold Key, Silver Key, or Honorable Mention. Gold Key work then advances to national judging.
