팀을 짜서 한 해 동안 합성생물학 프로젝트를 직접 굴리고, 연말 Grand Jamboree에서 발표하는 국제 대회다.
무엇인가
iGEM은 학생들이 팀을 이뤄 한 해 동안 합성생물학 프로젝트를 직접 설계하고 굴리는 국제 대회다. 표준화된 생물학 부품(BioBricks)으로 유전공학 시스템을 만들고, 실험·모델링·인간 실천(human practices)·안전성 검토까지 전 과정을 거친 뒤 연말 Grand Jamboree에서 결과를 발표한다. 운영은 비영리 단체 iGEM Foundation이 맡는다. 고등부와 대학부 등 여러 트랙으로 나뉜다.
한국 학생 참가
한국 학생도 학교나 기관 단위로 팀을 짜서 등록하고 참가할 수 있다. 보통 대학 연구실, 일부 고등학교, 동아리가 팀을 꾸려 지도교수나 멘토의 지원을 받아 나간다. 참가하려면 팀 등록비가 들고, 실험 공간·재료·모델링 같은 프로젝트 수행 자원도 필요하다. 그래서 학교나 기관을 통해 실험실 접근권과 예산을 확보하는 게 현실적인 관문이다. 한국 대학팀은 꾸준히 나가고 있다. 진입 경로 자체는 열려 있고, 고등부 트랙으로 고등학생 팀도 도전할 수 있다.
입시에서의 의미
합성생물학·생명공학·바이오에 관심 있는 학생이라면, 실제 연구 프로젝트를 한 해 동안 처음부터 끝까지 끌고 간 경험을 보여줄 수 있다. 실험 설계, 팀 협업, 모델링, 윤리·안전·사회적 영향(human practices)까지 다루기 때문에, 수상 여부보다 프로젝트의 깊이와 본인이 실제로 무엇을 했는지가 더 중요하다. 입시에서 어떻게 읽힐지는 상황마다 다르다. 성적 하나로 합격이 되진 않는다.
고등학생도 iGEM에 참가할 수 있나?
가능하다. iGEM에는 고등부 트랙이 있어서 고등학생 팀도 나갈 수 있다. 다만 실험 공간과 멘토, 자원이 필요해서 보통 학교나 기관 단위로 팀을 짠다.
개인으로도 참가할 수 있나?

What it is
iGEM is an international competition where student teams design and run their own synthetic biology project over a year. You build a genetic engineering system, often from standardized biological parts called BioBricks, and take it through the whole arc: experiments, modeling, human practices, safety review. At the end of the year you present your work at the Grand Jamboree. The nonprofit iGEM Foundation runs it, and there are separate tracks including high school and collegiate divisions.
For Korean students
Korean students can take part by forming a team at the school or institution level and registering. Most teams come out of university labs, a few high schools, or student clubs, with a faculty advisor or mentor backing them. You pay a team registration fee, and you need the resources to actually run the project: lab space, materials, modeling capacity. So getting lab access and a budget through a school or institution is the real gateway. Korean university teams compete every year, the entry path is open, and high school teams can go in through the high school track.
Why it matters for admissions
If you're into synthetic biology, bioengineering, or the life sciences, iGEM lets you show that you carried a real research project from start to finish over a year. It covers experimental design, team collaboration, modeling, and the ethics, safety, and social side (human practices), so the depth of the work and what you personally contributed matter more than where you placed. How it reads in admissions depends on the rest of your application. One activity doesn't get you in.
Can high school students do iGEM?
Yes. There's a high school track, so high school teams can compete. You need lab space, mentors, and resources, so teams usually form at the school or institution level.
Can I enter on my own?
