공통 에세이 외에 개별 대학이 따로 요구하는 짧은 추가 에세이. 보통 "왜 우리 학교냐", "왜 이 전공이냐"를 묻는다.
무엇인가
보충 에세이는 공통 에세이(Common App 개인 에세이)와 별개로 개별 대학이 자체적으로 요구하는 추가 글이다. 한 학생이 같은 공통 에세이를 모든 대학에 보내는 것과 달리, 보충 에세이는 학교마다 프롬프트가 다르고 그 학교에만 제출한다. 가장 흔한 유형은 "Why Us"(왜 우리 학교에 지원하나)와 "Why Major"(왜 이 전공을 공부하려 하나)다. 두 질문을 합쳐 묻는 경우도 많다. 조지아공대는 "왜 이 전공을 선택했고, 왜 조지아공대에서 그 전공을 공부하려 하는가"를 한 문항으로 최대 300단어 안에 묻는다. 길이는 짧다. MIT는 "이 분야가 왜 MIT에서 끌리는가"를 100단어 이내로, 예일은 학업 관심사를 다루는 단답을 200단어 이내로 요구한다. 길이가 짧다고 비중이 작은 것은 아니다. 입학사정관은 이 글로 지원자가 학교를 실제로 조사했는지, 학교 환경이 그 학생과 맞는지를 본다. 핵심은 구체성이다. 어느 학교에나 그대로 붙여도 말이 되는 글은 약점이다. 위치, 규모, 명성, 날씨, 랭킹처럼 검색하면 나오는 일반적 이유는 변별력이 없다. 대학 측이 공통으로 강조하는 평가 기준은 진정성, 자기 인식, 그리고 지원자의 목표가 그 학교의 특징과 어떻게 맞물리는가다.
유형·구조
- Why Us (왜 우리 학교): 특정 학교의 프로그램, 강의, 교수, 학풍이 지원자와 어떻게 맞는지 설명한다. - Why Major (왜 이 전공): 전공에 끌린 계기와 그 전공을 이 학교에서 공부하려는 이유를 잇는다. 학교가 실제로 쓰는 전공명을 정확히 확인해야 한다. - 결합형: 조지아공대처럼 Why Us와 Why Major를 한 문항으로 묶는다. - 커뮤니티 / 활동 / 다양성 에세이: 소속 공동체, 의미 있는 활동, 다른 배경의 사람들과의 교류를 묻는 별도 유형. - 단답(Short Take): 200자(약 35단어) 안팎의 아주 짧은 질문. 예일의 "단답" 세 문항이 예다.
한국 학생을 위한 가이드
한국 학생과 학부모가 가장 자주 놓치는 부분은 보충 에세이를 공통 에세이의 부록 정도로 여기는 것이다. 미국 대학 다수는 보충 에세이를 지원자가 그 학교를 실제로 조사했는지 가늠하는 지표로 본다. 흔한 실수 하나는 한 학교용으로 쓴 글을 다른 학교 이름만 바꿔 재사용하는 것이다. 입학사정관은 엉뚱한 학교나 잘못된 전공명이 적힌 글을 매년 받는다. 또 하나는 전공명을 잘못 쓰는 것이다. 학교가 Economics로 부르는데 Business라고 쓰면 조사를 안 한 표시가 된다. 영어가 모국어가 아닌 학생은 길이가 짧은 만큼 한 문장도 헛되이 쓰지 않아야 한다. 100단어 안에 자기 경험, 구체적 근거, 그 학교만의 요소를 모두 담아야 한다. 합격이나 결과를 보장하는 외부 도움은 없다. 글은 본인의 경험과 목소리에서 나와야 하며, 대필은 정직성 원칙에 어긋난다.
입시에서의 의미
보충 에세이는 그 학교에만 보내는 글이다. 평가에서 핵심은 구체성과 적합성이다. 검색으로 알 수 있는 일반적 이유가 아니라, 그 학교의 특정 프로그램이나 자원과 지원자의 목표를 연결해야 한다. 조지아공대는 진정성과 자기 인식, 목표와 학교 가치의 정렬을 본다고 명시한다. 길이는 보통 100~400단어, 단답은 200자 안팎으로 짧다. 마감 직전 몰아쓰지 말고 일찍 시작해 학교별로 따로 조사하는 편이 안전하다. What it is
A supplemental essay is an additional piece of writing a specific college requires on top of the main Common App personal essay. The personal essay goes to every college unchanged; supplemental essays are different at each school, written for and submitted only to that school. The most common types are the "Why Us" essay (why you want to attend this college) and the "Why Major" essay (why you want to study a given field). Schools often combine the two. Georgia Tech, for example, asks in a single prompt: "Why do you want to study your chosen major, and why do you want to study that major at Georgia Tech?" with a 300-word maximum. These essays are short. MIT asks why a field of study appeals to you at MIT in 100 words or fewer; Yale asks a 200-word short answer tied to your academic interests. Short length does not mean low stakes. Admissions readers use these essays to see whether you actually researched the school and whether the environment fits you. Specificity is the core test. An essay that could be pasted into any application is a weakness. Generic reasons that anyone can search up (location, size, prestige, weather, ranking) carry little weight. The evaluation criteria colleges state in common are authenticity, self-awareness, and how your goals align with what makes that school distinct.
Key structure
- Why Us: explain how a specific school's programs, courses, faculty, and culture fit you. - Why Major: connect what drew you to a field with why you want to study it at this school. Verify the exact name the school uses for the major. - Combined: some schools merge Why Us and Why Major into one prompt, as Georgia Tech does. - Community / Activity / Diversity essays: separate types asking about a community you belong to, a meaningful activity, or engaging with people of different backgrounds. - Short Take: very brief prompts of roughly 200 characters (about 35 words), such as Yale's three "short takes."
For Korean students
A frequent misread among Korean students and parents is treating the supplemental essay as a minor appendix to the main essay. Many U.S. colleges treat it as a gauge of whether you actually researched the school. One common mistake is reusing an essay written for one school and only swapping the name. Admissions offices receive essays every year that name the wrong college or wrong program. Another is getting the major name wrong: writing "Business" when the school calls it "Economics" signals you did not look. For students writing in a second language, the short length means no sentence can be wasted. A 100-word answer has to carry your experience, a concrete reason, and a school-specific detail at once. No outside help can guarantee an outcome, and the writing must come from your own experience and voice; ghostwriting violates application honesty rules.
Why it matters for admissions
A supplemental essay is written for one school only.
